The book is known for its twists and turns and its complex, unreliable narrators. The third part takes a dramatic turn as the reader learns more about the truth behind Amy’s disappearance. The novel is divided into three parts, with the first two parts alternating between Nick’s point of view in the present and entries from Amy’s diary detailing their courtship and marriage. Published in 2012, this famous psychological thriller follows the disappearance of a woman named Amy and the subsequent investigation into her husband, Nick. These novels often include murder, loss, criminal investigations, and incredibly cunning characters attempting to manipulate one another. Flynn’s novels are incredibly popular and known for following female protagonists (and often antagonists) who challenge the standards society sets for them. While serving in the South Pacific he received a Purple Heart and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. Hyams enlisted in the United States Army in 1942. He also quotes a samurai maxim, “The angry man will defeat himself on the battlefield as well as in life.” I have found this good advice when dealing with difficult people. A short book (less than 150 pages), Zen In the Martial Arts is nevertheless very wise. Hyams practiced with noted figures in the field such as Bruce Lee and Ed Parker. In the book, Hyams recounts his years of experience in the martial arts and reveals how the daily application of Zen principles developed his physical expertise and gave him the mental discipline to control his personal problems, including self-image, work pressure and competition. Hyams shares how to diffuse conflict with a positive outcome. Hyams’ philosophy is less about technique and more about philosophy, quite a bit of which is useful even if one does not practice the martial arts. Zen In the Martial Arts by Joe Hyams has long been a favorite of mine. Reviewed by by Robert Fisher, Book Department at Bookmans Grant The age for this book is a little interesting.
